A Virtual Production and AI symposium and summit, and the 2026 paper behind it. Free to download.
V7 · 2026 edition · includes the Gray Box method
Learn to Fly is a symposium and summit creating a vision for the future of Virtual Production training. The paper sets out how a college, university or region can build a Virtual Production studio and, more importantly, the skills pipeline that makes it worth building.
It began as research for the South East of England and Hertfordshire, and it is written to transpose to any UK region. The 2025 summit proved the appetite. The 2026 edition has to prove the method, so this version adds the neutral "gray box" stage now being used at feature scale, sets it honestly against LED volumes and green screen, and proposes the cheapest possible way for an institution to test it before a penny of capital is committed.
26 pages. Written and compiled by Marc de Launay, Nova Mundi Studios.
What is inside
The neutral capture volume where environment and lighting are generated in post. Surface, lighting, camera solve, proxy build and what stays conventional on the floor.
Three methods, three cost profiles, three different sets of skills to teach. Where the look gets made, what each one costs to change your mind about, and the main risk in each.
The lowest capital VP stage an institution can run, repurposing a room most colleges already own. The room, the rig, tracking and reference, proxy construction and the post lab.
Photogrammetry, splats and NeRFs, then generative environments. Complementary, not sequential, and how to teach students to choose between them.
Risks, rights and craft. The unaudited financial claims, the consent line that has to hold, craft displacement, and why one feature is not yet a pipeline.
The summit and symposium record, the stakeholder network it established, and the three strands carrying it into the 2026 programme.
